  • Sightseeing Spots in Hahajima

Hahajima Tourism Association, in the Oki Port Passenger Terminal (Inside the passenger terminal)

This is the best place to get tourist information for Hahajima. Come here to find out about lodging, eating, guided tours, and more. If you are planning to go into the Kiyomigaoka Limestone Cave, come here first to borrow keys and helmets. If you are going to climb Mt. Chibusa, stop here first to buy a (300-yen) summit kit; then stop by again after you get down to pick up your commemorative certificate.

Wakihama Nagisa Park
(5 minute walk from the passenger waiting room)

A beach area where the locals often come to take a break. During spring, 20 or 30 whitetip reef sharks gather in the shallows here. Don't be scared; they are usually quite well-mannered. A part of the beach is set aside as a protected spawning area for green turtles; if you come during spawning season, you will see 20 or 30 of these lovely creatures, too.

Samegasaki Observation Point
(5 minute walk from the Oki Port Passenger Terminal)

The observation point overlooks the entrance into Oki Port. You can clearly see the Hahajima Maru as it enters and leaves. Come here to watch for humpback whales during the watching season (February to April). If you're lucky, a whale may suddenly materialize as it breaches up out of the water.

Southern Tip of the Tokyo Road System
(10 minute drive from the Oki Port Passenger Terminal)

The south end of Route 241 South is the southernmost point of roads administered by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. A sign tells you that you have reached the end of the road, at 26°37" north latitude and 142°11" east longitude. Feel free to take a picture with this sign in the background.

Shizukasawa-no-mori Walk
(10 minute walk from the Oki Port Passenger Terminal)

A lovely place for a short walk, with few ups and downs. Along the way you will see the remains of an old navy base, the well-preserved remnants of a canon, and other signs of less peaceful times. When the weather is good this is also a great place to watch the sunset into the Pacific.

Rolfs Memorial Hall
(10 minute walk from the Oki Port Passenger Terminal)

A small structure built with a Hahajima stone called Rolfs, the museum displays treasured documents and photographs, old sugar-making implements, and other items of interest. It's not a big museum, but even so it will give you a good idea of how people in the area used to live and work.
